On April 8, 2025, a roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

About 500 people were in the club at the time. Around 231 people died and more then 200 people were hurt. On that day, the popular singer who was performing and the former Major League Baseball player were also victims. The accident is believed to be caused by the building's weak structure from a past fire and problems with the roof supports. 

There was a similar case not too long ago. In Japan, on January 28, 2025, a road in Yashio City, Saitama, sank and a truck fell into a hole. The cause was said to be a broken, old sewer pipe. 

What we can learn from these accidents is how important it is to find old infrastructure early and take care of it. Buildings, roads, and other important structures need to be checked and repaired regularly.

In the future, we need to use these lessons to make sure such accidents don't happen again and take action to prevent them!
